Know your budget. This is a great time to talk to one of our experienced loan officers. Also remember that just because you can spend X dollars on a house doesn’t mean you should. Keep in mind that you may want to do renovations, buy furniture, or use the money you saved for something else in your new home.
Know your neighborhood. Location. Location. Location. Does the area fit your needs? Research what’s around. Drive around. Walk around and get a good feel for the area. Do you like what you see? Make sure it has what you’re looking for in a neighborhood. Does it suit your priorities and lifestyle? Is it close to work? What stores are close by? If it’s far from your usual destinations (work, stores, etc.), make sure you are OK with the extra miles you’ll be putting on.
Know your must-haves. Determine what you can and can’t live without. Do you have to have more than two bathrooms? A certain amount of square footage? Are you willing to put a little sweat equity in your home or do you prefer a home that doesn’t need any renovations? Decide these things before you go home shopping. Be as realistic as possible. If the master bath doesn’t have the chandelier you always envisioned, keep in mind you can always install one. Remember there is a home that’s perfect for you, but there is no perfect home.
